DescriptionFOR USE BY IT AND HSIS ONLY: The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is seeking a NETWORK ENGINEER III-ENT to manage the purchase, installation, and support of network communications, including LAN/WAN systems. To evaluate current systems and work on complex problems where analysis of situation requires in-depth evaluation of various factors. To plan large scale systems projects through vendor comparison and cost studies. To provide work leadership and training to lower-level network engineers. This position will commit to fostering an environment of heightened security following Information Technology Security Policies and participating in security training, such as Health Insurance Portability Accountability Act (HIPAA) and Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), on an annual basis.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Installing and configuring network devices like routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers
2. Managing network protocols like BGP, OSPF, TCP/IP
3. Implementing network security policies and best practices
4. Analyzing network traffic patterns and identifying performance bottlenecks
5. Diagnosing and resolving complex network issues
6. Leading network engineering projects and providing technical guidance to junior engineers
7. Documenting network procedures and standards.
(Annual Salary: $85,600 - $125,000)
Qualifications
Associate's degree in Information Systems or a related field and six (6) years of related experience required. Work experience may substitute for education requirements. Advanced understanding of network protocols (TCP/IP, routing protocols, VLANs, etc) and expert level knowledge of network design principles and best practices are necessary for success in this position. Advanced proficiency in network management tools and automation platforms is strongly preferred.
Additional Preferred Experience and Skills:
1. Experience with various network hardware vendors (Palo Alto, HPE, Ruckus, F5)
2. Troubleshooting and analytical skills
3. Experience in system administration of Linux, Python and Ansible type systems is a plus.
4. Experience implementing network monitoring (SNMP) and alerting is desirable.
